Choir Tours

There is an intangible quality that happens to a choir’s sound after they have traveled together. They stop looking at their folders and start looking at each other. That "click" is usually where a good choir becomes a great one.

Why Do We Tour

Musical Growth and Excellence

When a choir travels, the musical stakes are raised.

  • Performance Stamina: Performing the same repertoire in different acoustics—from resonant cathedrals to "dry" school auditoriums—forces singers to listen intensely and adapt their vocal technique.

  • Intensive Focus: The days leading up to and during a tour involve concentrated rehearsal time that you simply cannot replicate in a 50-minute daily class period.

  • Clinics and Exchanges: Tours often include "exchanges" with other schools or clinics with university professors, providing students with fresh perspectives and professional feedback.

Building Community and "Esprit de Corps"

A choir is a team where the "equipment" is the human body. For the ensemble to sound its best, there must be a high level of trust.

  • Social Bonding: 24/7 interaction on buses and in hotels breaks down social barriers between grade levels and cliques.

  • Shared Identity: Overcoming the challenges of travel (delayed flights, lost luggage, or "tour colds") creates a shared history that manifests as a more unified sound on stage.

Cultural and Global Citizenship

For many students, a choir tour might be their first time leaving their state or country.

  • Contextual Learning: Singing Mozart in Vienna or spirituals in the American South provides a historical and cultural context that a textbook cannot provide.

  • Empathy through Art: Performing for diverse audiences helps students realize that music is a universal language, fostering a sense of global connection.

Professionalism and Responsibility

Touring is a "soft skills" boot camp.

Students must manage:

  • Punctuality: Being "five minutes early" for bus departures.

  • Uniform Care: Keeping formal wear pristine while living out of a suitcase.

  • Public Representation: Acting as ambassadors for their school and community in public spaces.
